I finally made the leap yesterday to get rid of cable. We were paying $158 a month, and didn't even have HD, the picture looked terrible! I did a lot of research and took my time doing this, started thinking about it over a year ago.
Yesterday I took the cable box to Cox cable, and requested that they upgrade our internet one level to make it faster. The cost was $60 for just that service. I went to Target and bought a Roku box, and upgraded our router to an N750 so it would be fast enough for real time live-streaming. I thought about upgrading our modem as well, but I read in some places that it wouldn't make a difference. We have a Surfboard 5100 that I got free after rebate from Comcast like 9 years ago!
I went home with everything and first did a speed test with my current equipment. I had a speed of 3314 KBPS in the first speed test on my old equipment, this was with the upgrade to the service as it took effect immediately at the Cox cable office. I replaced the wireless router and did a second speed test, that one came back 8705 kbps. Now I am not very technical, so I don't know if that is particularly fast, but I will say my computer seems really zippy, and according to the test it nearly tripled the speed. The wireless router I replaced was also 9 years old and free after rebate, it was a Belkin F5D7230-4 in case anyone is curious.
Ok, so next I plugged in the Roku. I found the experience of setting it up really frustrating. It got locked up in settings and wouldn't show channels. I couldn't figure out why and finally just ended up unplugging it and restarting it, and viola, the channels showed up. I thought I had Amazon streaming, but no, Amazon mom does not include that feature when you get it for free. So, I went to E-Bay and signed up for Netflix through their E-Bay Bucks link, they are paying $15 in E-Bay bucks for their free trial right now. I knew I had to get either Amazon or Netflix, and since I was miffed with Amazon for taking the streaming part out of their mom membership, I decided Netflix was the best choice, I also read reviews and heard better things about Netflix.
Ok, so now the cable is $60 a month, and the Netflix will cost $7.99 a month after our free trial. A nice reduction in our overall bill, but will it work?
I went through and added a bunch of channels on the Roku, and was very impressed watching the Borgia's in HD on Crackle. But, I still didn't have any live streaming channels, and there are times in this house where we just want background noise, and live streaming tv is necessary. So, more research. I found out there are several news channels that stream live all day, including BBC (one of my favorites that we have missed since our trip to Germany), CNN International, and Al Jazeera.
These are all private channels and you will need a code to get them added to your Roku box. Here is a list of the ones I added and the codes to add them to the ROKU:

With the current speed, and I have the Roku hardwired, not wirelessly connected to the router, I can live stream any channel and have had no issues so far. I have been sipping my coffee and watching BBC evening news all morning, I love it!! And last night I picked out a movie and watched it on Netflix. Now I just need to get my husband's opinion!
I really do wish I could get HBOGO without a cable subscription, that is one I would be willing to pay for, but currently, it is totally unavailable. Since it is always available in the hotels we stay in though, we will just catch up on the shows we have missed while we are there.

After a rather sad start to my week, I am finally back on track. I didn't waste my time this week so far, I just worked on non-couponing related things, because I cannot coupon and handle cashiers and all those numbers if I am stressed. This week so far I figured out that my favorite super-long t-shirts that Paris Paris (a boutique here) charges between $25 and $70 for, are available at Ross right now, for $5.99!! The brand is either Zanana Outfitters, or Black Dress, same shirt, just a different label. I managed to get a nice collection of them, and I was very excited because they really fit perfectly!
I also switched nail stuff from CND Brisa to Ink Shellac. I read on the back of the Ink shellac bottle that it cures under UV in 2 minutes, or under LED for 30 seconds. 30 seconds??? I added an LED lamp to my repertoire (found it cheap on e-bay), hopefully it will make doing my nails go from over an hour to under 30 minutes. That would certainly be amazing, because I HATE waiting for that stuff to cure, and doing it myself means I take forever painting 4 nails on one hand, curing it, painting 4 nails on the other hand, curing it, second coat on the first hand, cure, top coat, cure, I have to do the thumbs separately so they set properly, so those two minutes cure times really really add up! Also love that this version is soak-off, the Brisa wasn't, I bought the entire kit long before soak off existed, and I couldn't financially justify switching to the newer stuff until I had used up the kit I bought. So, all that stuff is checked off my list, yay!! Should make my at-home manicure project much faster and more fun, and I get to experiment much more and still save money compared to what I used to pay at a salon for the same service.
I buy a lot of my nail stuff locally these days, because there is a fantastic nail supply store next to LeeLees market that carries absolutely everything imaginable for nails, at great prices. The owner is from Viet Nam, he was telling me a bit about his life story, and it makes me happy to shop there and support him.
Anyway, back to the topic at hand:
Today I plan to go and get the Farmer John sausages that are free after coupon at Safeway. I hate shopping at my Safeway because they hate coupons and all people who brandish them. The last time I was in I actually was using a coupon from their display in the store, and they hassled me about it! Thankfully it isn't hot out today, and there are lots of Safeways around me, so I am simply going to do a big round robin until I get all the sausages I have coupons for, or rainchecks, if they are sold out, which happens frequently around here, keeping within Safeway's coupon limits, and still stocking my freezer. I also need to pick up the Nivea lip care products at Safeway that are free after coupon, so that will also happen today.
The other thing on my agenda is to stop in at my Walgreens and see if my Hot Wheels order came in. Normally they call me when I order something and it arrives, and it is already mid-week and no phone call, so getting a little apprehensive! The cars were a deal that came out before I started this blog, the Hot wheels are .79 cents each this week, and there was a coupon for $3 off wyb $10 worth. I had two of the coupons, and realized my Walgreens only had 10 of those cars in stock, so I placed my order two weeks ago for this sale so I would be able to maximize this deal. Hopefully they get them and I can get the cars, I figure the kids will either enjoy them this summer, or they will make great stocking stuffers or birthday gifts, or I will sell them on either Craigslist or E-bay. We have a toy surplus lately, and all these great toy deals at Target, CVS, and Walgreens are certainly not helping! Of all the things to be overstocked on, lol!

Girl Stuff - Women need to read this!!
This is a topic I only just learned about. Maybe I am way behind the curve, but I watched this video, and it honestly got me thinking. Like I said in my other post today, I am having a bad day. I decided to take some positive action to make myself feel better by doing research. This is what I found out. Tampons contain Dioxin. What? A cancer causing agent in there??? Every month????? This video explains a lot, and it made me stop and think. Not only is this option cheaper, it won't clog up the plumbing, and it is environmentally sound, it also does not cause CANCER! I am all about it...

Overdrawn...
Today I am having a bad day. Perhaps everything will turn out fine, perhaps not. This is only one of my bad-day causing issues, the other is much worse, and I don't want to talk about it. In the meantime, I thought I would share a tip for anyone in my situation.
My bank account is suddenly $2 overdrawn. One issue with couponing is that I constantly do little tiny charges on my cards. These charges have a way of sneaking up on me. One day my account will say $18, the next it will be $2 overdrawn (today), with very little rhyme or reason, and PayPal, which I also use constantly, isn't any help, that account says I have $8, but then charged my bank account anyway. If I were a better bookkeeper I am sure I could just track everything in Quicken and move on with my life, but well, I am not that organized. I forget things here and there, and I do lots of things, all the time! Those under $1 transactions really can add up in months where there are lots of great deals.
So, what is my solution? I bank with USAA, and I do not have access to their electronic deposit app. My husband does, but I do not, and he is out of town. I mailed checks for over $50 two days ago (all rebate checks!), but they haven't hit yet. I have until midnight tonight to work out a solution.
Well, here is my solution. Target automatically and immediately refunds my account as soon as I do a return there. I don't know if this will work for everybody, but it works with my account. I am simply going to go return some things that I got earlier in the month that I have extra of, in couponing we always have extra, thankfully! These amounts will go directly back to my bank account and save my financial bacon! Yay!!

Inside those coupons are a few coupons to use for this deal. There was a $7 off Crest 3D Whitestrips coupon, and a .75 cent off coupon for Crest 3D White toothpaste that I know of for sure. When you are at Target with those Revlon coupons you could look through the toothbrush area and see if you can locate them.
Walgreens has some deals that would go nicely with this rebate and those coupons. I think there is a $10 off coupon for Crest Whitestrips at Walgreens, and there are $2 in Register Rewards when you buy 7 travel sized items. There are also some coupons on E-Bay that might be helpful. If you try to do this, please let me know what you end up doing and what it costs you!
Also, don't forget to check your old receipts, you might already have some receipts and UPC codes that might qualify for this rebate. I save all receipts for this reason, because I never know which one might be the one I need for a rebate I don't know about yet!

Target and Revlon Craziness
I went to get my $3 back from the Hello Kitty Mega Blocks set and ended up doing a Revlon transaction. I used 4 of the $5 off any 2 Revlon coupons, and one manufacturer Catalina for $1 off. What I bought is pictured below. The register kept adjusting the coupon values all weird so my lovely cashier just overrode it and put in the amounts on the coupons since neither of us could figure out why the $5 coupon was transforming itself into $2.87. I ended up paying 42 cents, and getting, and this is my favorite part:

Today's Shopping Plan
It is Sunday. Sunday is a great day for every couponer because on Sunday the new ads begin and the new coupons come out in the Sunday paper. I have gotten very finicky as a couponer in recent years, so I only buy the Sunday paper if I know there are multiple coupons inside it that I will use. Since we get ad previews so early these days, I find that I usually have plenty of time to prepare by either printing most of my coupons online, or by ordering what I need from E-Bay. This saves me having tons of newspapers and inserts lying around my house. With all the toys, obviously we wouldn't have space for newspapers too!
My Sunday plan today is not that fancy. I have some Register Rewards that are going to expire unless I use them today at Walgreens. Register Rewards are coupons that print when you buy something, usually they take a certain dollar amount off your entire purchase. There are a lot of rules involved in using them, but lately I have been finding lots of great deals with them, so I still have some on hand.
My plan today is to go to Walgreens, use up my Register Rewards that are going to expire on non-stock-pile items like sour cream or Starbucks or whatever catches my fancy, and to buy the free after rebate Neosporin Essentials. I will use Register Rewards to buy the Neosporin Essentials, and then get a check back in the mail in a couple of weeks. I like money that I can keep re-using. So, I bought something three weeks ago that triggered a register reward, probably the $30 blueberry anti-aging vitamins that were free after Register Rewards that week. I used that Register Reward the following week to buy something else that also triggered a Register Reward (probably Belvita breakfast bars with $1 off coupon found at the grocery store, and something else), I then used that to buy another thing the following week that triggered yet another Register Reward (Schick razors, with the $4 off coupon from E-Bay). Ok, so for my original $10 purchase, I have now gotten way more than $10 worth of products. I have probably gotten maybe $100 worth of products. And I still have a Register Reward to spend. I will now use that Register Reward to buy something that I can submit for a nice cash rebate, and that money will go right back into my bank account, all safe and sound after its long journey. Kind of like using a fishing lure over and over again instead of a worm that you can only use once. Of course there are still unavoidable costs, like taxes, and the stamp to submit the rebate, but overall, this is a much better way of using my funds than just walking into the store and buying things all willy-nilly... lol!

Toy Overload
I love my kids. Since my marriage, I have 3 of them. This post is not about that. This post is about all of the toys I have purchased for them since their last visit. All of these toys are new, unopened, and cost less than $1 each. I am feeling almost like the lady with the 5000 Cabbage Patch Kids right now lol! My rule in couponing has always been this: I can find almost anything I need at the dollar store. The quality usually isn't so good, but in a pinch, on a budget, it will do. When I first started couponing my goal was to find better quality items for less than I would pay at the dollar store. At the time I didn't realize how easy that goal would be. I later was forced, through filled up cupboards and storage areas, to switch that rule to "it doesn't come in the door unless I really need it or it was free". Well, I haven't applied the second rule to toys yet, as I didnt think I could possibly need to. But alas, I have been proven wrong!!

I just noticed that one of the adsense ads on my page is for Sharebuilder. In my experience, they don't have account minimum balances or monthly fees for any of these accounts, so it is a nice cheap way to get a good account bonus. Just look for the click through banners, and watch your e-mails, I think I found the $25 bonus for the savings account in an e-mail they sent me after I opened another account, and the $50 for a checking account came from a click through banner on yahoo.com.
